How DMX512 universes, channels and addresses fit together — and a clean addressing scheme for rigs of up to 32 fixtures.
One DMX512 universe carries 512 channels. Every fixture occupies a block of consecutive channels starting at its address — a moving head on 17 channels set to address 1 uses channels 1–17, so the next fixture starts at 18.
Two fixtures may share the same address only when you want them to respond identically (audience blinders on opposite sides of the stage are the classic case).
For rigs up to roughly 32 fixtures, one universe is usually enough. Beyond that, or when adding video/media servers, plan for a second universe from the start.
Daisy-chain fixtures from the console out using quality 3- or 5-pin XLR data cable — never use microphone cable for permanent installs, as its shielding and impedance cause flicker at length.
Termination is not optional on long runs: a 120 Ω terminator on the last fixture prevents signal reflections that show up as random strobing.
Many compact fixtures include sound-activated and auto modes, which let bars and mobile DJs run a rig without any console. Set identical fixtures to the same auto mode and address group, and the rig moves together.
When the show grows a console later, the same addressing scheme carries over unchanged.
